The Effects of Scutellaria Radix Extract on the Protection and Recovery of Liver Injury


Abstract
An attempt was made to investigate the effects of Scutellaria radix extract(SRE) on the protection and recovery of liver injury by acute treatment of CCl_4
When rats were treated with SRE and CCl_4 by gavage, the serum alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities released from liver decreased and prothrombin time of plasma was shortened and excretion of sulfobromophthalein(BSP) through the liver in SRE administered rats was proceeded rapidly in comparison with only CCl_4 treated rats.
The loss of glutathione S-transferase activity, the responsible enzyme for BSP metabolism in the liver, and the lipid peroxidation by CCl_4 treatment were reduced and the amount of reduction was depended on the concentration of SRE.
When primary cultures of hepatocytes were treated with SRE, the BSP uptake by anion active transport system of hepatocyte membrane and ouabain uptake by neutral compound active transport system were increased. But after that by changing the incubating media with fresh media, the intracellular concentration of xenobiotics were diminished significantly. And lipid peroxidation by CCl_4 was also decreased.
The ability of DNA synthesis in primary cultures of hepatocytes was not varied with treatment of SRE but the ability of protein synthesis which decreased by CCl_4 treatment was increased according to the concentration of SRE treated.
